I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with The Diabetes Collective on a podcast where we discussed the pros, cons, and place for fruit while living with diabetes. Needless to say, when clips from the conversation hit social media, the comments got heated.
Everyone seemed to have a personal experience with fruit that shaped their opinion, whether that meant avoiding it altogether, eating it freely, or swearing by certain types while steering clear of others.
So, let’s set the record straight. Can you eat fruit with diabetes? And does the type of fruit really matter? Read along as we explore what the science says about fruit, blood glucose, and diabetes.
Can You Eat Fruit If You Have Diabetes?
The “TL;DR” (too long, didn’t read) answer: Yes, of course people with diabetes can eat fruit. Fruit is nutritious, delicious, and a staple in many healthy eating patterns.
While fruit contains carbohydrates and can raise blood glucose, that doesn’t mean people with diabetes need to avoid it. There’s an important difference between managing carbohydrate intake and avoiding it altogether.
“But Fruit Has Sugar...”
True! Fruit naturally contains sugars, including fructose and glucose. But whole fruit also provides fiber, water, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Eating an orange is nutritionally and physiologically different from drinking a sugar-sweetened beverage. Simply put, “contains sugar” does not automatically mean “bad for diabetes.”
What Does Fruit Actually Do to Blood Sugar?
Because fruit contains carbohydrates, it can and will raise blood glucose. However, the actual glucose response depends on much more than the type of fruit you choose. Portion size, total carbohydrate, fiber, ripeness, preparation, and whether you eat whole fruit or drink it as juice can all influence the response.
What you eat with your fruit, your activity level, medications, insulin, and your individual physiology also matter. If you use a CGM, it can be a helpful tool for understanding how your body responds to different fruits rather than labeling any one fruit as universally “good” or “bad.”

A 2023 meta-analysis combining 19 randomized controlled trials found that increasing fruit intake did not worsen glycemic control in people with diabetes. In fact, fruit consumption was associated with lower fasting blood glucose, supporting the inclusion of fruit as part of a balanced eating pattern for diabetes.
Another 2021 observational study found that eating about two servings of fruit per day was associated with better glucose control and a 36% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes over five years compared with lower fruit intake.

While there isn’t one “best” fruit for diabetes, fruits like berries, apples, pears, citrus, peaches, and melon are rich in fiber and water and may have a lower glycemic impact. Some tropical fruits, such as mango, papaya, pineapple, and guava, may have a greater impact on glucose depending on portion size and ripeness.

Is Whole Fruit Better Than Fruit Juice?

Should You Pair Fruit With Protein or Fat?
Pairing fruit with protein or fat can help make a snack or meal more satisfying and may slow digestion and influence the glucose response. Think apple with peanut butter, berries with Greek yogurt, a peach with cottage cheese, or fruit with a handful of nuts.
But pairing isn’t a requirement. Despite what social media may have you believe, fruit doesn’t always need a protein or fat “chaperone” to be enjoyed safely with diabetes.
