For example, a 0.3 mL U-100 insulin syringe can make a 5-unit dose easier to measure than a 1 mL syringe, but it cannot hold a 70-unit dose of U-100 insulin.
People using different injectable medications or taking substantially different doses may need more than one syringe size. Ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider to confirm the appropriate syringe and measurement markings for each prescription.
Mixing Insulins in One Syringe
Combining compatible insulins in one syringe can reduce the number of injections, but it requires careful preparation. Not all insulins can be mixed. Only combine them when your healthcare provider has confirmed compatibility and taught you the correct technique.
When mixing a compatible short- or rapid-acting insulin with NPH insulin, air is injected into the NPH vial first, followed by the clear insulin vial. The clear insulin is then drawn into the syringe first, followed by NPH. This helps prevent contamination of the clear insulin vial.
