Omnipod 5 Update 2026: Everything You Need to Know
As a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist, I’ve been hearing about the upcoming Omnipod 5 updates for months. Now that they’re here, it’s been exciting to train patients and clinicians on the enhanced features, especially those that many users have been requesting for quite some time.
Working in specialty endocrinology with a focus on diabetes technology, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitors, I’ve already started incorporating these updates into patient education and clinical practice.
If you use Omnipod 5 in your practice or care for patients using automated insulin delivery, here’s a practical refresher on the updates that launched in June 2026, including what’s new, who is eligible, and what patients need to do to access the Enhanced Omnipod 5 features and get the most from the system.
What’s New in the Enhanced Omnipod 5 Update?
In June 2026, Insulet officially rolled out the Enhanced Omnipod 5 algorithm and expanded compatibility with the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor. These updates include a new 100 mg/dL glucose target, improved alarm handling to help users stay in Automated Mode longer, and additional CGM choice with the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus.
These enhancements are designed to improve Time In Range, reduce the day-to-day burden of diabetes management, and make automated insulin delivery more effective and accessible for people living with diabetes.
New 100 mg/dL Target Glucose Improves Personalization
One of the most anticipated updates to the Enhanced Omnipod 5 system is the addition of a 100 mg/dL target glucose setting. Previously, users could choose target glucose settings ranging from 110 to 150 mg/dL. With this update, clinicians now have six target options to better personalize therapy: 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 mg/dL.
For many people using Omnipod 5, the target glucose is one of the most important settings because it’s the only one that directly influences how aggressively the algorithm adjusts insulin delivery. The new 100 mg/dL target allows the system to aim for tighter glucose control while still prioritizing safety.
Clinical data presented by Insulet suggest that using the 100 mg/dL target can improve Time in Range (70 to 180 mg/dL) without a clinically meaningful increase in hypoglycemia.
While not every patient will be an appropriate candidate for the lowest target, having another option gives more flexibility to individualize therapy based on a person’s goals, glycemic patterns, and comfort with tighter glucose management.
Key Takeaway
- The new 100 mg/dL target expands personalization within the Omnipod 5 system, giving providers another tool to help appropriate patients safely optimize glycemic management.
Enhanced Omnipod 5 Algorithm Keeps Users in Automated Mode Longer
The second key update is how the Enhanced Omnipod 5 algorithm handles prolonged hyperglycemia.
Previously, high blood glucose would trigger an Automated Delivery Restriction alarm, forcing users out of Automated Mode and into Manual Mode for a period of time. With the update, that alarm has been replaced with a Check Blood Glucose Advisory. After acknowledging the alert, users can remain in Automated Mode while the system continues delivering automatic correction doses every five minutes.
It may sound like a small change, but it addresses one of the biggest frustrations many Omnipod 5 users have reported. This means more time in Automated Mode, fewer exits during high glucose events, and continued automatic correction doses every five minutes.
Key Takeaway
- This update won’t necessarily improve glucose control on its own, but it should make the system easier to live with by reducing interruptions and allowing automation to keep working when people need it most.
Omnipod 5 Compatibility with the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus
The latest Omnipod 5 update adds compatibility with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor, giving users more continuous glucose monitor options and making it easier for current Libre users to begin automated insulin delivery. With LibreLinkUp, caregivers can also remotely follow a patient’s glucose data.
CGMs Compatible With Enhanced Omnipod 5:
- Abbott FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus (Controller or Android, iPhone to follow)
- Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus (Controller only)
- Dexcom G6 (Controller or Smartphone)
- Dexcom G7 (Controller or Smartphone)
Key Takeaway
- Omnipod 5 compatibility with the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus expands CGM choice, which is a significant benefit for users with strong sensor preferences or limited options due to insurance coverage.
A Few Practical Tips for Getting Started With the Enhanced Omnipod 5
Of course, users can’t necessarily get started with all these updates on day one. Don’t you wish it were that easy? A few things need to fall into place, including getting compatible Pods, enabling the right settings, and installing the necessary software updates.
Omnipod 5 Software Updates
Beginning June 2026, current Omnipod 5 users will start receiving over-the-air software updates on their Controllers and/or Omnipod 5 apps on compatible smartphones. New app installations will already include the updated software. Current Omnipod 5 users do not need a new Controller.
Enhanced Omnipod 5 Compatible Pods
Users will also need to fill a prescription for compatible Omnipod 5 pods through their pharmacy. The updated pods are required to access the enhanced algorithm and can be identified by a black “R1” dot on the packaging.
With the expanded CGM compatibility, there are now three different Omnipod 5 pod versions available. Be sure to select the version that matches your compatible CGM:
- Dexcom G6/Dexcom G7 Pods
- FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus/FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus Pods
- Dexcom G6/FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Pods
Choosing a Compatible Device: iPhone, Android, or Omnipod 5 Controller
The device used to run the Enhanced Omnipod 5 system depends on the compatible CGM and preferred device.
Currently, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus require the Omnipod 5 Controller or Android device, while iPhone users remain limited to Dexcom integration. iPhone compatibility with FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is expected at some point.
After installing the software update and using compatible pods, users can access the new 100 mg/dL target glucose setting, pair with the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor (if using a compatible device), and benefit from the removal of the Automated Delivery Restriction alarm.
What the Omnipod 5 Update Means for Healthcare Professionals
The Enhanced Omnipod 5 update gives healthcare professionals more ways to personalize automated insulin delivery.
- The new 100 mg/dL target glucose setting offers an option for tighter glycemic management, while the existing targets of 110 to 150 mg/dL remain important for people at higher risk of hypoglycemia or those with other clinical considerations.
- Compatibility with the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus also expands CGM choice, allowing more people to benefit from the Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System without switching glucose monitoring platforms.
- Updates to the algorithm are designed to help users remain in Automated Mode longer, with fewer interruptions during periods of hyperglycemia.
Taken together, the June 2026 update is arguably the most meaningful enhancement to the Omnipod 5 algorithm since the system launched in 2022.
